A 50-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday by the Judiciary Police (PJ) for committing at least two thousand crimes of child sexual abuse and at least one crime of child pornography in Póvoa de Lanhoso. The abuses took place "in the classroom context" in the schools where the suspect worked.
According to a statement from the PJ sent to the newsrooms on Wednesday, the abuses took place from the 2017/2018 school year to the present day in the elementary school where he worked. The victims were girls between the ages of 6 and 9. The complaint was made by the Póvoa de Lanhoso Secondary School, after "reports from several students that they had been victims of sexual abuse by the suspect".
Following the suspicions, the authorities searched the man's workplace, where it was possible to seize "some objects that may be related to the practice of the aforementioned crimes".
The man had already worked in different schools in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Barcelos and Amares, so the PJ clarifies that "the real dimension of his criminal activity" is still unknown.
The detainee will be presented to the Braga Judicial Court for the first judicial interrogation and application of coercive measures.
